“Freedom is…the right to write the wrong words.” – Patti Smith
So many wanted to know her, so many wanted to be her and they all still do. BEBE BUELL is the fashion and rock and roll icon that many still copy and continue to immortalize today. Bebe started as an American fashion model, splashing the pages of high level magazines with her illustrious face and grabbing attention from any eye that caught her paper eye. She had a special look, she was not the usual everyday cookie cutter fashion model to grace a page. Her flawless and unusual beauty landed her the role of Playmate of the month in November 1974 for Playboy. Many stars sought out this stunning beauty and she endured several relationships with rock legends. Her brief relationship with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler produced daughter Liv. Bebe began her own fabulous music career in 1981 with several amazing collaborations and musical efforts. After having Liv, Bebe later managed her career helping to launch her very successful modeling and acting career. Bebe was such a gorgeous force in the 1970’s scene that director and writer Cameron Crowe said he based his historic character “Penny Lane,” in the award-winning film “Almost Famous,” on two women he knew then, one being Bebe. He also stated much of Penny’s dialogue was from statements Bebe made in interviews over the years. Bebe went on to write her New York Times bestselling autobiography “Rebel Heart: An American Rock and Roll Journey” in 2001.
Here, I share an amazing beauty interview with this iconic woman:
WHAT INSPIRES YOU THAT YOU FIND BEAUTIFUL?
The purity of spontaneity and effortless style. People who are beautiful because they don’t know it – they just are, usually inside and out. Kate Moss is one of those women – effortless style and grace. My daughter has it too.
A BEAUTY OR MAKEUP PRODUCT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
Givenchy powders and Chanel #5. La Mer for my face.
WHAT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU HAVE EVER READ?
Recently, “Just Kids” by Patti Smith.
WHAT IS A BEAUTY RITUAL YOU DO EVERY DAY OR EVERY NIGHT?
My mother started me young with the cleansing of the face before bed. I must brush my teeth, floss, remove makeup and moisturize before slumber or I feel incomplete. I sleep better!
WHERE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN?
The Amazon Jungle in 1994 with my daughter – Angel Falls in Venezuela. But my heart belongs to the Caribbean – I adore St. Barths and have been going there off-season for 20 years. I love the shore. I grew up on the ocean so one day I dream of having a beach house where I was raised in Virginia Beach, VA.
ANY BEAUTY SECRET TO SHARE?
I’m sure this is said a lot but it really remains true – inner spiritual growth and quest keeps you grounded and in the light. If you are happy and kind to others, it really does show in your face. Your skin even glows if you treat others with respect. I am also a big fan of Korean Bath Spas – where they scrub you, rub you and you sweat in the steam. I am hooked on Korean beauty and health culture – they start teaching their children very young about caring for your body and soul.
Bebe returned to music in 1997 and formed the Bebe Buell Band. She released her first recording in ten years with the single “Air Kisses for the Masses” in 2009 and released her full length album later that fall. Her fabulous music is available on itunes and Amazon MP3.
